Machinery Condition Monitoring

Condition Monitoring

Vibration condition monitoring is a predictive maintenance technique that uses sensors to continuously or periodically measure and analyze the vibration signatures of machinery. Its primary goal is to detect early signs of mechanical faults—such as imbalance, misalignment, looseness, or bearing wear—before they lead to equipment failure or unplanned downtime.

Monitoring Strategies

Permanent (Continuous) Monitoring: Used for critical machines; sensors are always active to provide real-time alerts and rapid shutdown in case of severe faults.

Intermittent (Periodic) Monitoring: Used for less critical assets; portable sensors or handheld devices are used at scheduled intervals.

Key Standards

ISO 13373 Series: Provides guidelines for vibration data collection, analysis, and diagnostics.

ISO 10816/20816: Defines vibration severity zones for various machine types, aiding in fault diagnosis and maintenance decision

Benefits

Early Fault Detection: Identifies problems before they escalate, reducing downtime and repair costs.

Improved Safety: Prevents catastrophic failures and protects personnel and assets.

Optimised Maintenance: Enables condition-based and predictive maintenance, focusing resources where needed most.

Extended Equipment Life: Reduces wear and tear by addressing issues promptly
